How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day
The first day at nursery is a big moment for the whole family. Children settle best when the day feels predictable, so the most useful preparation happens quietly in the weeks beforehand rather than on the morning itself.
Talk about nursery in ordinary, matter-of-fact terms. Walk past the building. Name the educators your child will meet. Read stories about starting somewhere new. Familiarity does most of the work.
Practise the small independent tasks that make a child feel capable: washing hands, using the toilet, putting on shoes, opening a lunch box. Confidence in these details frees your child to focus on making friends.
A short, cheerful goodbye tells your child that you trust this place. A long, anxious one tells them there is something to worry about.
The morning itself
Get up early enough that nobody is rushed. Eat breakfast. Let your child carry their own bag. Arrive on time rather than early, so there is no waiting around for the room to fill. Say goodbye once, clearly, and go.
What settling in really looks like
Some children walk in and never look back. Others cry for a week, then suddenly do not. Both are normal. We will keep you updated during the day, and we would far rather you called to ask than spent the morning wondering.
